Bean

The smallest boy in Rotterdam with the mind that saved the world.

Bean (real name Julian Delphiki II) is a student of Greek and Igbo descent who emerges from the streets of Rotterdam to become one of the most pivotal figures in the Enderverse. Though described as the smallest and youngest member of Ender's jeesh, he is simultaneously recognized as its smartest and most fair-minded strategist. While only a supporting character in Ender's Game, Bean serves as the lead protagonist of the parallel "Bean Quartet" (or "Shadow Quartet"). In these works, his role shifts from student to the behind-the-scenes facilitator of major historical events, including the victory against the Formics and the unification of Earth under Peter Wiggin.

Lore & Background

Bean's origin traces back to the streets of Rotterdam, where he survived as an orphan despite his diminutive stature. Upon entering Battle School, Ender Wiggin initially isolates him, mirroring Ender's own childhood experience to force Bean to flourish. Bean becomes a member of Dragon Army and later of Ender's jeesh during the Third Invasion. His influence extended far beyond the war; he was instrumental in uniting Earth under Peter Wiggin and navigating the chaotic years following the conflict. In the Shadow Quartet, his strategic foresight counters the machinations of Achilles de Flandres, proving that his intelligence could shape global politics just as effectively as military campaigns.

Reader's Guide

Ender Wiggin is the protagonist of the Ender quintet, while Bean is the lead character of the "Shadow Quartet", which shows him as the behind-the-scenes facilitator of most of the main events of that period. His relationship with Petra Arkanian, a fellow member of the jeesh, is central to his post-war story. Together, they countered Achilles de Flandres, a villain who shared Bean's Rotterdam origins but displayed sociopathic tendencies.
