Reader's Guide
Colonel Hyrum Graff offers the six-year-old Ender a place in Battle School after his fight with the bully Stilson. On the shuttle to the school Ender breaks the arm of Bernard, a boy of his launch group, who then treats him with contempt and picks on him and on Shen. Bernard's hold on the group ends when Ender and Alai become friends in the battle room and Ender posts mocking messages on the computer system; Shen becomes Ender's first friend at the school. Ender finds solace in a simulated adventure game in which he is killed by, and eventually kills, a giant.
