Swordmasters of Ginaz
The school of master swordsmen that trained Duncan Idaho.
The Swordmasters of Ginaz are a school of martial artists in Frank Herbert's Dune universe, mentioned briefly in Dune (1965) and Dune Messiah (1969). Their fighting skills are described as prized and unmatched, and the Terminology of the Imperium in the appendix of Dune names House Ginaz as one-time allies of Duke Leto Atreides who were defeated in a War of Assassins with Grumman. Duncan Idaho is a Swordmaster of the Ginaz, which is why his body is later sold to the Tleilaxu as that of a master swordsman and adept of the Ginaz School.
Lore & Background
The school's origins are told in the Legends of Dune prequel trilogy (2002-2004) by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Jool Noret of the ocean-covered planet Ginaz turns personal tragedy into a fierce, innovative fighting style during the Butlerian Jihad against the thinking machines of Omnius. Reluctant to take students, he eventually relents as young warriors flock to Ginaz, and his style becomes an art in its own right; the mercenaries of Ginaz come to be regarded as the most elite warriors available outside the Imperial Sardaukar.
