Honored Matres

The Honored Matres are a fictional matriarchal group from Frank Herbert's Dune universe, known as a violent cult driven by a hunger for power, brutality, and sexual control. They emerge as a breakaway faction of the Bene Gesserit during the Scattering, a vast diaspora that follows the death of the tyrant Leto II Atreides in God Emperor of Dune. After Leto II’s death, his plan triggers the collapse of the galaxy-spanning Imperium. Major races and orders from the Empire send representatives beyond known space in untraceable no-ships, embarking on the Golden Path to protect humanity from annihilation.

Freed from millennia of enforced stagnation, trillions flee the Old Empire into uncharted territory, scattering humanity across a volume of space far larger than the original Empire. Over the next 1,500 years, these isolated explorers and colonists form new cultures. Among the major powers born from the Scattering are the Honored Matres, believed to have come from a blend of Bene Gesserit missionaries and members of Leto II’s all-female military, the Fish Speakers.

Their title comes from the Bene Gesserit rank of Reverend Mother. Unlike the Bene Gesserit, who work from the shadows to manipulate power, the militaristic Honored Matres pursue direct control through ruthless conquest. In Heretics of Dune, set 1,500 years after Leto II’s death and 5,000 years after Paul Atreides, the Honored Matres suddenly reappear in the known space of the former Imperium, causing chaos and leaving destruction behind them.
