Count Fenring
A weasel-faced whisperer, an almost-Kwisatz Haderach, and the Emperor's most dangerous friend.
Count Hasimir Fenring is a fictional character in the Dune universe, appearing in Frank Herbert's 1965 novel Dune and later works by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson. Described by Princess Irulan as Shaddam IV's only real friend and one of the Imperium's deadliest fighters, he is a "dapper and ugly little man" with a weaselish face and overlarge dark eyes. While serving as the Emperor's chief counselor and emissary, Fenring operates under a unique constraint: he is a eunuch, an "almost Kwisatz Haderach" crippled by a flaw in his genetic pattern. Married to Bene Gesserit Lady Margot, he utilizes a humming verbal tic to communicate privately with her while appearing to suffer from a speech impediment. His role shifts from the "Emperor's errand boy" to a powerful agent who navigates the treacherous politics of Arrakis and the Harkonnen succession.

Background
Fenring's origins are detailed in the Prelude to Dune trilogy, where he is revealed as the son of Chaola, a Bene Gesserit wet nurse who raised him alongside Shaddam IV. Though intended by the Sisterhood to be a male Kwisatz Haderach, his genetic pattern failed, leaving him with immense talent concentrated into "furtiveness and inner seclusion." As an adult, he is a supremely intelligent killer; Dune: House Atreides notes he murdered at least fifty men and a dozen women over the years, including Shaddam's brother Fafnir to secure his friend's claim to the throne.
Baron Harkonnen fears him as "a killer with the manners of a rabbit," while Feyd-Rautha observes his uncanny ability to move one way while speaking another. Despite being labeled "Ambassador to the Smugglers" by Harkonnen, Fenring serves Shaddam faithfully until the Emperor orders him to kill Paul Atreides; he refuses, recognizing that killing Paul would destroy the Bene Gesserit breeding program's ultimate success.
Did You Know?
- In the timeline of Sandworms of Dune, Hasimir stabbed Paul Atreides with an ancient knife between the events of Dune and Dune Messiah, nearly killing him.
- Fenring is omitted from both David Lynch's 1984 film and Denis Villeneuve's 2024 Dune: Part Two, though his wife Margot appears in the latter.
