Lore & Background

Pitchford began his career working on ports of Duke Nukem 3D as a contractor/employee at Rebel Boat Rocker. He later co-founded Gearbox Software in February 1999. He has overseen games including Borderlands, Bulletstorm, and Borderlands 3. He also acquired The Magic Castle in 2022 and is a member of the Academy of Magical Arts.

In Their Own Story

The studio lights hummed at 2 a.m. in Frisco, Texas. Randy sat at a desk cluttered with energy-drink cans and a half-eaten sandwich, the glow of three monitors painting his face in blue. On the center screen, Duke Nukem's face—rendered in high-poly, sunglasses catching a light source that didn't exist in the level—stared back at him. Fourteen years of emails, reboots, engine swaps, and E3 promises compressed into a single playtest build. He hit the run key. Duke walked into the first corridor, quipped a line, and the whole room seemed to exhale. Randy leaned back, cracked a smile, and typed into the internal chat: "She's alive. Tell the team. Tell them I said 'You're welcome.'" The cursor blinked. Somewhere in the building, a developer groaned and laughed at the same time.
