In Their Own Story

The neon sign above the bar flickers—half the letters dead, the rest buzzing in a sickly magenta. Duke is three stools from the end, boots up on the counter, a half-empty glass of something amber sweating in his fist. He's mid-sentence, telling the bartender about a time in '94, when the ceiling rips open. Green light floods the room. The first Vlad drops from the breach, limbs too long, jaw unhinged, and the second one is already pulling the third through the hole in the plaster. Duke doesn't stand up. He finishes the sentence. Sets the glass down. Then he reaches under the bar, past the bottles, and pulls out the shotgun he'd been keeping there since the last time something like this happened. The bartender, who has seen this before, simply turns the jukebox up. The first Vlad hits the floor before the first round leaves the chamber. Duke cracks his neck. "You boys want to do this in the parking lot, or do I gotta come up there?"

The bar explodes around him. He doesn't look back. The moon is waiting, and he's already late.
