In Their Own Story

The corridor smells like burnt circuitry and cheap coffee. Kevin Cloud stands by a flickering terminal, arms crossed, watching the ceiling tiles rattle as something enormous shifts three floors up. He doesn't run. He never runs. He just types a line into the terminal—something about a containment breach, a frequency, a name—and then steps aside as the door at the far end of the hall blows inward with a sound like a thunderclap in a small room. He glances back once. The corridor is already filling with smoke. He goes to get a second coffee.
