Flying Nimbus

A golden cloud that flies only for the pure of heart.

Known in Japan as the Kinto'un, the Flying Nimbus is a legendary golden cloud that serves as a mode of transportation in the Dragon Ball series. It is capable of flight at supersonic speeds and is governed by a single condition: only those with a pure heart can ride it. The cloud rejects anyone harboring impure thoughts, such as lust or malice. As warriors grow stronger and learn to fly using their own Ki, they often outgrow the need for the Nimbus, but it remains a symbol of the series' early adventures.

Lore & Background

The Flying Nimbus is introduced as a magical cloud owned by Master Roshi, the Turtle Hermit. It is first used by Goku during his early adventures with Bulma, allowing him to travel across great distances in search of the Dragon Balls. The cloud's most defining trait is its purity requirement: anyone with impure thoughts, such as lust or malice, will fall through it. This is demonstrated when Bulma, Yamcha, and others attempt to ride it and fail. Goku, due to his innocent and pure-hearted nature, is able to ride it effortlessly. As Goku grows older and marries, his heart changes, and the cloud begins to reject him as well, marking a turning point in his character development. The Nimbus remains a recurring element, used by other pure-hearted characters like Gohan and Goten.

In Their Own Story

The wind roared softly against Goku's ears as he stood balanced on the soft, yellow surface of the Nimbus. Below him, the green mountains of Earth stretched into an endless horizon, dotted with rivers that shimmered like silver ribbons in the afternoon sun. He gripped his staff tightly, leaning forward as the cloud accelerated without a sound. There were no engines to hum or wings to flap, only the silent trust between rider and vessel. Goku smiled, feeling the familiar warmth of the magic beneath his boots. For a moment, he was just a boy flying home for dinner, not a warrior destined to save worlds. The sky opened up around him, vast and blue, offering freedom that no gravity could ever bind.

Reader's Guide

The Flying Nimbus responds to intent rather than controls. To summon it, call its name or focus your will. However, the cloud will only become solid for those with a pure heart—anyone with impure thoughts like lust or malice will fall through. Once mounted, simply lean or shift your weight to steer; the cloud accelerates effortlessly, reaching supersonic speeds without any engine noise. It is best used for long-distance travel or aerial reconnaissance, especially by young or innocent characters who have not yet mastered Ki-based flight.
