Pu'ar

Yamcha's floating, shapeshifting companion who cut off Goku's ape tail.

Pu'ar (Puar in Funimation's dub, Pu-erh in its subtitles, Squeakers in the Harmony Gold dub) is Yamcha's soft-spoken blue companion in Dragon Ball. Pu'ar can float and change shape, skills learned at the same shapeshifting school Oolong attended, where Oolong teased Pu'ar constantly. Pu'ar and Yamcha first appear as desert bandits who shadow Goku, Bulma and Oolong to steal their Dragon Balls, then reform and become their friends. When Goku first turns into a giant ape, Pu'ar becomes a pair of scissors and snips off his tail to change him back, and later teams up with Upa to beat Dracula Man in Uranai Baba's tournament. The name puns on pu'er tea, and the design was meant to look a little like a cat. Toriyama said he drew Pu'ar as male, though the dub treats the character as female. Naoko Watanabe provides the Japanese voice.
