Reader's Guide
Toriyama took Beerus's name from "virus" but thought it meant "beer", which started the drink puns used for Whis and later gods and attendants. Beerus's design is based on a cat, partly Toriyama's own Cornish Rex.
Beerus finds Goku and beats him easily, even in Super Saiyan 3. He then comes to Earth to ask Vegeta about the legend and joins Bulma's birthday party for the food, staying calm until Majin Buu refuses to share the last pudding, at which point he defeats Buu, Gotenks, Gohan, Android 18, Piccolo and Tien with ease. Goku uses the Dragon Balls, learns the Super Saiyan God needs a ritual with his fellow Saiyans, takes the form and fights Beerus. Beerus wins but enjoys the match, and spares Goku and the Earth.
