John Herschel

Sir John Frederick William Herschel, 1st Baronet (7 March 1792 – 11 May 1871) was an English polymath active as a mathematician, astronomer, chemist, inventor and experimental photographer. He invented the blueprint, originated the use of the Julian day system in astronomy, and named seven moons of Saturn and four moons of Uranus. His Preliminary Discourse (1831) was an important contribution to the philosophy of science, advocating an inductive approach to scientific experiment and theory-building.

Herschel was born in Slough, the son of astronomer Sir William Herschel and nephew of Caroline Herschel. He studied at Eton College and St John's College, Cambridge, graduating as Senior Wrangler in 1813. He became friends with mathematicians Charles Babbage and George Peacock. He took up astronomy in 1816, building a reflecting telescope with an 18-inch mirror and 20-foot focal length. Between 1821 and 1823 he re-examined double stars catalogued by his father with James South. He was a founder of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1820, winning its Gold Medal in 1826 and again in 1836, and the Lalande Medal in 1825. The Royal Society gave him the Copley Medal in 1821. He was made a Knight of the Royal Guelphic Order in 1831 and served three times as president of the Royal Astronomical Society.
