William Frederick Denning (25 November 1848 – 9 June 1931) was a British amateur astronomer who, despite lacking formal scientific education, made notable contributions to the field. His work included compiling catalogues of meteor radiants, studying Jupiter’s red spot, and discovering five comets. As a young man, Denning was a skilled cricketer; W G Grace invited him to play for Gloucestershire, but Denning declined due to his reserved personality.

Denning spent much of his time searching for comets, finding five in total. Among them was the periodic comet 72P/Denning–Fujikawa. He also investigated meteors and novae, discovering Nova Cygni 1920 (V476 Cyg). In 1869, he served as both secretary and treasurer of the short-lived Observing Astronomical Society. Denning was elected to the Royal Astronomical Society on 8 June 1877. He first joined the British Astronomical Association on 24 June 1891, left, and rejoined in 1898, becoming a member on 16 October of that year. He directed the Association’s Comet Section from 1891 to 1893 and its Meteor Section from 1899 to 1900. In 1895, he received the Prix Valz from the French Academy of Sciences. Over his lifetime, Denning published 1,179 articles in major scientific journals such as *Nature*, *The Observatory*, *Astronomische Nachrichten*, the *Journal of the Royal Astronomical Society of Canada*, the *Journal des Observateurs*, and the *Monthly Notices of the Royal Astronomical Society*.

Denning was awarded the Gold Medal of the Royal Astronomical Society in 1899. He also earned the Donohoe Comet Medal for discovering a comet on 23 July 1890. His standing in the astronomical community was such that after his death, a memorial tablet was placed on his house. Lunar crater Denning and Martian crater Denning were named after him in 1970 and 1973, respectively. Asteroid 71885 Denning, discovered by the Spacewatch program in 2000, was named in his memory; the official citation was published by the Minor Planet Center on 4 October 2009 (M.P.C. 67219).

William Frederick Denning, working from his observing post in Bristol, England, made the serendipitous find on the night of 26 March 1894. What he spotted in the constellation Leo Minor was a faint smudge of roughly 11th magnitude, trailing a modest tail stretching about five arcminutes. Crucially, the comet had already swung past both its perihelion and its closest approach to Earth, meaning Denning caught it on the wane rather than at peak brightness. Over the following weeks the object dimmed steadily; by April observers described it as very faint and elongated, and by May only a handful of sightings were recorded. The final detection came on 5 June 1894, after which the comet slipped beyond reach. The early orbit determinations were anything but straightforward: Lipót Schulhof first derived a parabolic path from positions spanning 27 to 31 March, but by mid-April he suspected a deviation and recalculated an elliptical orbit with a 6.74-year period. Three Decades in the Dark: The Recovery of a Lost Comet

After its last confirmed sighting in June 1894, the comet vanished from the sky and was never seen again for over a century. The breakthrough came in 2024 when Maik Meyer noticed that Mars-crossing asteroid 2007 HE4—originally flagged by the LINEAR survey on 17 April 2007 at a dim 18.7–19.5 magnitude—possessed a comet-like orbit that closely matched the predicted path of Denning's 1894 object. A machine-learning model had already ranked the asteroid as likely active, partly because it had been observed at only one opposition. Meyer's orbital comparison provided the crucial link. To confirm, researchers re-examined archived images from the Great Shefford Observatory taken on 18 and 19 April 2007, which revealed a slightly elongated shape with a 3-to-2 aspect ratio stretching eastward. Stacked frames from the 1.82-metre telescope at the Dominion Astrophysical Observatory, captured on 19 April 2007, showed a coma roughly 5.3 arcseconds across and a faint, spike-like tail extending eight arcseconds. Earlier apparitions between 1972 and 1997 offered poor viewing geometry, and although the 1963–64 pass was favorable, no photographic plates could be located.

The current period of approximately 9.4 years reflects this cumulative gravitational sculpting. The comet has also made several notable passes near Earth—0.27 AU on 12 February 1894, 0.62 AU on 25 December 1908, and 0.47 AU on 29 January 1964—each offering a brief window for observers before it receded into the outer solar system.

One of the most puzzling aspects of the 1894 apparition was the comet's anomalous tail, which some observers initially interpreted as evidence that the nucleus had shattered.
