Guillaume Joseph Hyacinthe Jean-Baptiste Le Gentil de la Galaisière was a French astronomer who discovered several nebulae and was appointed to the Royal Academy of Sciences. He is best known for his ill-fated 11-year journey to observe the transits of Venus in 1761 and 1769, which he documented in a popular account of his adventures and misadventures.

Guillaume Le Gentil was born in Coutances and initially intended to enter the church before turning to astronomy after a lecture by Joseph-Nicolas Delisle. By 1753 he was a professional astronomer and wrote influentially on estimating the distance from Earth to the Sun using transits of Mercury, arguing against Edmond Halley that these transits could not yield accurate measurements. He discovered what are now known as Messier objects M32, M36, and M38, as well as the nebulosity in M8, and was the first to catalogue the dark nebula Le Gentil 3 in Cygnus.
As part of an international effort coordinated by the Royal Society and the French Academy of Sciences to measure the distance to the Sun via the transit of Venus, Le Gentil set out from Paris in March 1760 for Pondicherry, India. Delayed by the Seven Years' War, he reached Isle de France in July 1760 and eventually sailed for India in March 1761. The ship was blown off-course, and when it neared Pondicherry, the captain learned the British had occupied the city, forcing a return to Isle de France. On 6 June 1761, the sky was clear, but the ship's rolling prevented observations.
Le Gentil stayed for the next transit in 1769. After mapping part of Madagascar, he attempted to observe from Manila but faced Spanish hostility, then returned to Pondicherry, restored to France by treaty. He built a small observatory, but on 4 June 1769 the sky was overcast and he saw nothing. His return was delayed by dysentery and a storm; he arrived in Paris in October 1771, having been declared legally dead, replaced in the academy, his wife remarried, and his estate plundered. He recovered his seat through litigation and royal intervention, and remarried.
