Giovanni Battista Hodierna

Giovanni Battista Hodierna (sometimes spelled Odierna) lived from 13 April 1597 to 6 April 1660. A Sicilian astronomer and Roman Catholic priest, he worked for Giulio Tomasi, the Duke of Palma, in Palma di Montechiaro. Born in Ragusa, he died in Palma di Montechiaro. While serving as a priest in Ragusa, he also pursued astronomy.

In 1654, Hodierna published *De systemate orbis cometici, deque admirandis coeli characteribus*, which included a catalogue of celestial objects and a list of double stars. The catalogue contained about 40 entries, at least 19 of which were real, verifiable nebulous objects that could be mistaken for comets. His work foreshadowed later catalogues by Charles Messier and double-star lists by Christian Mayer and William Herschel, but it had little influence—Messier likely never saw it.

Hodierna wrote prolifically across many fields. Besides astronomy, he used optical microscopes to study insects, describing the compound eye of flies and noting that only the queen bee in a colony lays eggs.

His other works include *Archimede redivivo colla stadera del momento* (1644), *Protei cælestis vertigines seu Saturni systema* (1657), and *La stella nuova e peregrina comparsa l'anno 1600 sul petto del cigno* (1659).
