Lore & Background
The map was one of the most balanced in the game upon release, and has become a very important competitive map. Overpass was added into the Active Duty map pool in 2014 in Global Offensive, and this was carried over into the start of Counter-Strike 2. In April 2024, Dust II returned to the active duty pool, replacing Overpass, which led to mixed reactions from players and members of the pro scene.
In Their Own Story
The round starts with the smell of wet concrete and diesel. Kovač crouches behind the rusted shipping container on the B-side approach, his USP-S in his right hand, a smoke grenade already primed in his left. Across the canal, forty metres of grey-green water separates him from the A-site, and he can hear the muffled tick of footsteps on the far bank—two, maybe three CTs pushing through the narrow alley.
He doesn't throw the smoke yet. He waits. The water catches the late afternoon light and throws it back in a long, shimmering line that makes the far wall look like it's on fire. A flashbang arcs across the canal, detonating with a crack that stings his eyes even through his gloves. He blinks, spits, and peels around the container just as the first AWP bolt punches through the corrugated roof above his head, showering him in metal shavings.
He's already moving. The canal is ten metres wide, knee-deep, and the current pulls at his legs. He's halfway across when the second shot cracks and the water erupts in a spray of droplets a metre to his left. He dives flat, the canal water swallowing his face, and comes up on the far side with the AWP's barrel still smoking in the air above him.
The round is over. The canal is still. And somewhere behind him, the smoke he never threw is sitting on the ground, hissing softly in the wet.
Reader's Guide
Overpass emphasizes long-ranged combat. Players should be aware of the open canal area and the park, and use the roadway bridge for cover. The map's layout rewards careful positioning and long-range engagements.
