Canvas is typically stretched on a wooden frame called a stretcher and may be coated with gesso to keep oil paint from directly touching the fibers, which would cause decay. Traditional flexible chalk gesso uses lead carbonate and linseed oil over a rabbit-skin glue ground, but a variation with titanium white and calcium carbonate is more brittle and prone to cracking. Because lead-based paint is toxic, care is needed. Modern alternatives include synthetic latex primers with titanium dioxide and calcium carbonate bound in a thermoplastic emulsion. Some artists, like Jackson Pollock, Kenneth Noland, Francis Bacon, Helen Frankenthaler, and others, have painted on unprimed canvas. Staining acrylic paint into cotton duck canvas is gentler on the fabric than oil paint. In 1970, Frankenthaler said she left large areas of canvas unpainted because the canvas itself acted as strongly as paint or line—the ground was part of the medium, not just background.
Early canvas was linen, a sturdy brownish fabric well-suited for oil paint. In the early 20th century, cotton canvas (often called “cotton duck”) appeared.
