Architectural engineering applies scientific principles to the engineering design of buildings and building systems.[1] It unites structural, mechanical, electrical, lighting, acoustical, and construction engineering within interdisciplinary team environments.[1] Because people spend 86% of their time indoors, architectural engineers concentrate on indoor building environments that prioritize human well-being.[1]

Key facts and history

Architectural engineers address challenges from reducing greenhouse gas emissions to constructing resilient buildings.[2] Sustainable engineering guides architectural engineers to design systems that maintain environmental balance for future generations.[3] In Japan, a "first-class architect" serves as both architect and building engineer.[4] Building design by architectural engineers incorporates the newest scientific findings and technological tools.[2]

What the research sources say

The Penn State Architectural Engineering program states that graduates are widely considered creative systems engineers with formal training in creativity and design.[1] The same source identifies architectural engineering as the discipline with the highest potential to combat climate change.[1] Penn State AE reports virtually 100% placement upon graduation for the last three decades.[1] Over 90% of all architectural engineering students at Penn State secured internships during the summer of 2019.[1]

Approximately 50% of all architectural engineering students at Penn State participate in an international educational activity.[1] The Penn State AE program is accredited by the Engineering Accreditation Commission of ABET.[1]
