The large seeds, known as pine nuts, are 1.5 to 2 centimeters long, pale brown with a powdery black coating that rubs off easily, and bear a rudimentary wing that falls off readily, making wind dispersal ineffective. Instead, seeds are dispersed by animals, originally mainly by the Iberian magpie, and in recent history largely by humans. The species has been cultivated for its edible nuts and wood since at least the 4th century B.C. and earlier.
