Its leaves are mostly in bundles of three, and its cones are larger, 7–15 centimeters. *P. e.* var. *densa* (South Florida slash pine or Dade County pine) grows in the pine rocklands of southern Florida and the Florida Keys, including the Everglades. Its leaves are nearly all in bundles of two, with longer needles. Its cones are smaller (5–12 centimeters), the wood is denser, and the tree has a thicker taproot. Unlike the typical variety, its seedlings have a "grass stage" similar to longleaf pine. This variety is not frost tolerant, limiting it to South Florida.
Slash pine is found mostly in Florida and Georgia, extending from South Carolina west to southeastern Louisiana and south to the Florida Keys. It is common in East Texas, where it was first planted at the E.O. Siecke State Forest in 1926. Its natural habitat is sandy subtropical maritime forests and wet flatwoods. It grows best in warm, humid areas with average annual temperatures above 17°C, tolerating extremes from -18 to 41°C. Competition, fire, and precipitation limit its natural distribution.
