Its range stretches from Nova Scotia to eastern Quebec and southeastern Ontario, then south through the Adirondacks and New England, following the Appalachians into western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee. Other common names include yellow spruce, West Virginia spruce, eastern spruce, and he-balsam. It is the provincial tree of Nova Scotia.
This tree is perennial, shade-tolerant, and a late successional species. Under good conditions, it reaches 18–40 m (59–131 ft) tall with a trunk diameter around 60 cm (24 in), though exceptional individuals can grow to 46 m (151 ft) and 100 cm (39 in) across. Its crown is narrow and conical. The needles are yellow-green, 12–15 mm long, four-sided, curved, and sharply pointed, growing all around the twig. Bark is gray-brown on the surface, red-brown inside, thin, and scaly. The wood is light, soft, narrow-ringed, and has a slight red tint. Cones are cylindrical, 3–5 cm long, glossy red-brown, with stiff scales, and hang downward from branches.
Red spruce grows slowly to moderately and lives 250 to over 450 years. It is very shade-tolerant when young. It often forms pure stands or mixes with eastern white pine, balsam fir, or black spruce.
