Playing career

Schultz played minor hockey for the Maroons in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan. He was selected by the Prince Albert Raiders in the third round of the 1997 WHL Bantam Draft. Before joining the Raiders, he played for the Yorkton Mallers in the Saskatchewan Male U18 AAA Hockey League, where he was named Rookie of the Year for the Mallers, as well as top defenceman and MVP of the league's all-star game. He debuted for the Raiders in the 1998–99 WHL season, playing 58 games with five goals and 18 assists. In his sophomore season he played 72 games, scoring 11 goals and 33 assists, and was named the Raiders' top defenceman and most improved player. After being drafted by the Wild, Schultz served as team captain for the 2000–01 season, playing 59 games with 17 goals and 30 assists. He made his professional debut with the Cleveland Lumberjacks of the IHL for four games, scoring a goal and an assist. The next season he made his NHL debut with the Wild against the Edmonton Oilers on October 14, 2001, playing 52 games as a rookie with four goals and six assists. After the Wild's season, he joined the Houston Aeros of the AHL for the Calder Cup playoffs. On February 27, 2012, Schultz was traded to the Edmonton Oilers for Tom Gilbert. On March 5, 2014, he was traded to the Columbus Blue Jackets for a fifth-round pick. His tenure with the Blue Jackets was brief; on July 2, 2014, he signed a one-year deal as a free agent with the Philadelphia Flyers. On February 18, 2015, the Flyers re-signed him to a two-year deal worth $2.25 million annually.

Nick Schultz, who grew up on a family farm in Strasbourg, Saskatchewan, has two older brothers: Kris, who played pro hockey in the CHL and UHL, and Terrence. His parents are Robert and Carol. Cousin Jesse Schultz debuted in the NHL with the Vancouver Canucks during the 2006–07 season. Schultz and his wife have a son and two daughters, and they live in Calgary. His wife’s sister is married to former Colorado Avalanche player Cory Sarich. A friend of Jarret Stoll, Schultz regularly attends Stoll’s annual charity golf tournament. On June 26, 2019, the Philadelphia Flyers hired him as a player development coach.
