Playing career
Marc Methot started his major junior hockey career with the London Knights of the Ontario Hockey League in 2002-03. After that first season, the Columbus Blue Jackets picked him in the sixth round of the 2003 NHL entry draft, 168th overall. During the 2004-05 season, Methot and the Knights won the Memorial Cup by beating the Rimouski Océanic in the final. He turned pro in 2005-06 with Columbus's American Hockey League affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, playing 70 games and putting up two goals and 11 assists for 13 points. Methot made his NHL debut with the Blue Jackets in 2006-07, appearing in 20 games while also playing 59 for Syracuse. He became a regular on Columbus's blue line starting in 2008-09. On July 5, 2011, the Blue Jackets signed him to a four-year contract extension. He represented Team Canada at the 2011 and 2012 World Championships. Injuries, including a broken jaw during the 2011-12 season, hampered his play. On July 1, 2012, Columbus traded Methot to the Ottawa Senators for forward Nick Foligno. Ottawa had tried to acquire him several times during the 2011-12 season but couldn't close a deal. After losing two starting defensemen to free agency, the Senators made finding a blueliner a top priority and targeted Methot, who grew up in Ottawa. He started the season paired with Norris Trophy winner Erik Karlsson, and after Karlsson went down with an Achilles injury, Methot took on the role of anchoring the defense. The Senators finished the year with the second-lowest goals against average in the NHL. His steady play earned him an invite to Team Canada's training camp in the summer of 2013 for the 2014 Winter Olympics, though he didn't make the final roster. On February 16, 2015, Methot signed a four-year, $19.6 million contract extension with Ottawa, carrying an average annual value of $4.9 million.
The Wally and Methot Show
In 2021, Marc Methot and former TSN reporter Brent Wallace started a weekly podcast called The Wally and Methot Show, covering the Ottawa Senators and hockey news. Their debut episode on March 8, 2021, featured Daniel Alfredsson, with later guests including Erik Karlsson, Brady Tkachuk, and Bob McKenzie. Methot has since departed, and the show, now titled Coming in Hot, is hosted by Brent Wallace and Jason York.
