Playing career

Murray was selected ninth overall by the Everett Silvertips at the 2008 WHL Bantam Draft and later became captain of the team at the start of his third season in Everett. On June 22, 2012, the Columbus Blue Jackets chose him second overall in the 2012 NHL entry draft, after he had been ranked second among North American skaters on the NHL Central Scouting list. He signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Blue Jackets on July 24, 2012. During a game with the Silvertips on November 16, 2012, Murray injured his shoulder; he underwent surgery and missed the remainder of the WHL season, which also prevented him from playing in the NHL that year. He played his first NHL game on October 4, 2013, against the Calgary Flames, and scored his first NHL goal on October 25, 2013, against Jonathan Bernier of the Toronto Maple Leafs. Injuries caused him to miss more than 35% of his first five NHL seasons. The Blue Jackets re-signed him to a two-year, $5.65 million contract on February 11, 2016. After missing nearly half the games in the 2017–18 season, he signed a one-year qualifying offer from the Blue Jackets on July 14, 2018. On July 1, 2019, he signed a two-year, $9.2 million contract with the Blue Jackets. After seven seasons with Columbus, Murray was traded to the New Jersey Devils on October 8, 2020, for a 2021 fifth-round draft pick. In the shortened season, he recorded 14 assists through 48 regular season games with the rebuilding Devils. On August 2, 2021, as a free agent, he signed a one-year, $2 million contract with the Colorado Avalanche. He began the season in a third-pairing role, making his debut on opening night in a 4-2 victory over the Chicago Blackhawks on October 13, 2021. He recorded his first points with the Avalanche, two assists, in a 4-3 win over the St. Louis Blues on October 28, 2021. He appeared in 17 of 18 games with Colorado before suffering a lower body injury against the Nashville Predators on November 27, 2021.

International play

Murray participated at the 2012 World Junior Ice Hockey Championships in Calgary and Edmonton, winning a bronze medal. In 2012, he became the first draft-eligible player in many years to represent Team Canada at the World Championship, and was the second youngest Canadian to play in the tournament (after Paul Kariya in 1993). He won gold with Canada at the 2016 World Championship and was also named to Team Canada for the 2018 IIHF World Championship.
