Playing career

Trey Fix-Wolansky grew up in Edmonton and got his start with the CAC Canadians U15 and U18 AAA team in the Alberta Major Bantam Hockey League. He was picked for the 2014 AMBHL All-Star Game. After wrapping up his AMBHL time in 2015, he moved to the Spruce Grove Saints in the Alberta Junior Hockey League. As a 16-year-old, he put up 16 goals and 15 assists for 31 points, earning a spot on the AJHL North Division All Rookie Team. The Prince Albert Raiders originally drafted him in the WHL, but his rights were traded to the Edmonton Oil Kings for a fourth-round pick at the 2018 WHL bantam draft. He then signed a WHL Standard Player Agreement with the Oil Kings. On September 24, 2016, during the first WHL game ever at Rogers Place, he scored the arena’s first goal and was named the game’s first star. In his first five games with the Oil Kings, he had two goals and three assists. That performance got him onto the NHL Central Scouting Bureau’s November ‘Players to Watch’ list for the 2017 NHL entry draft. In February 2017, he notched his first career hat trick in a 7-4 loss to the Medicine Hat Tigers. After that, he scored his 21st goal of the season, breaking the Oil Kings franchise record for most goals by a rookie. He finished the 2016-17 season as the team’s second-leading scorer with 25 goals and 54 points in 70 games, was named the Oil Kings Rookie of the Year, and got an invite to the Edmonton Oilers rookie camp for the Young Stars Tournament. While playing for the Oil Kings, he attended St. Francis Xavier High School. In his sophomore season, he started with three assists against the Red Deer Rebels, kicked off an eight-game point streak, and kept scoring after the Christmas break. He ended that year with 32 goals and 57 assists for 89 points, plus 81 penalty minutes. In June 2018, the Columbus Blue Jackets selected him 204th overall in the NHL entry draft.
