Background
Colorado arrived having won 21 of 22 games, including the tie-breaker against San Diego and sweeps of the Phillies and Diamondbacks, but the NLCS sweep and a seven-game ALCS left the Rockies idle for eight days, the longest layoff in postseason history. The clubs had met in June, when the Rockies won two of three at Fenway Park. Boston won its second title in four seasons, and Terry Francona became the first manager to win his first eight World Series games. The Rockies became the first National League team to be swept in the World Series after sweeping the League Championship Series. Before the Series, the club's online-only ticket sale broke down within an hour; the Rockies blamed a denial-of-service attack, a claim never substantiated, and the home games sold out the next day.
