Deck Building

Choosing the eight cards a player takes into battle.

The mobile title Clash Royale merges tower defense, collectible card game, and MOBA mechanics into a real-time strategy experience.[1] A fundamental aspect of the game involves constructing a deck; after each match, players are free to assemble any eight cards they own into a new lineup.[2]

Geography and history

The game was designed for mobile phones rather than tablets, unlike Clash of Clans.[3] Clash Royale is regularly updated by Supercell to balance the game and add new content, with monthly themed seasons and a battle pass called "Pass Royale" introduced in July 2019.[4] Supercell, a Finnish developer recognized for creating Clash of Clans, Hay Day, and Boom Beach, created Clash Royale.[5] The game's idea stemmed from an earlier, discarded prototype titled The Summoners, which predated Clash of Clans; work on the concept resumed in 2014.[5]

Initially conceived as Wizard Arena within an original fantasy universe, Supercell later chose to integrate it into the Clash of Clans universe.[6] On January 4, 2016, Clash Royale had a soft launch for iOS across nine nations, followed by an Android soft launch in the same territories on February 16, 2016.[7] A worldwide release for both iOS and Android occurred on March 2, 2016.[7] Player spending on the game had reached $4.9 billion by its tenth anniversary.[8]

What the cited sources add

Hodapp also stated that the depth of strategy is amazing despite the small card pool and deck size.[9] Minor also observed that the gray list of missing rare cards in a deck becomes more of a taunt than a challenge.[10] Isa Muhammad of PocketGamer.biz reported that the Merge Tactics mode added in July 2025 requires no deck-building.[11]
