Pass Royale

The monthly battle pass that arrived with seasons in 2019.

The game was developed by Supercell and soft-launched in January 2016, with a global release on March 2, 2016.[1] In head-to-head matches, each player uses eight cards from a deck, spending elixir to deploy them, with the goal of destroying the opponent's towers while protecting their own.[2][3]

Geography and history

Clash Royale was designed for mobile phones, unlike Clash of Clans which was designed for larger tablet screens.[4] Supercell, the Finnish developer behind Clash of Clans (2012), Hay Day (2012), and Boom Beach (2014), created Clash Royale.[5] Initially called Wizard Arena and set in an original fantasy world, the game was later reworked by Supercell to take place within the Clash of Clans universe.[6]

What the cited sources add

Hodapp noted that the game simplifies and slows down RTS and MOBA elements enough to be easy to play while still making decisions feel important.[7] Tack also noted that the elixir gauge caps at 10, forcing action so resources are not wasted.[8] A 2025 PocketGamer.biz article reported that Clash Royale delivered its third-best month ever with $78 million in revenue, a 10x increase from early 2023.[9] Daniel Tack of Game Informer characterized the gameplay as "fun, fast" and so compelling that a short five-minute session could easily stretch into an hour.[8][10]
