Card Levels

Upgrading cards to make them stronger.

In Clash Royale, a card's level indicates its upgrade stage, and cards at higher levels possess greater strength.[1] A player's King Level, which is raised by upgrading cards, determines the power of their towers.[1]

Geography and history

Clash Royale was developed by Supercell, a Finnish game company.[2] Supercell later decided to set it in the world of Clash of Clans.[3] The Summoners, a prototype that was shelved before Clash of Clans came out, provided the initial concept for the game.[2] Supercell resumed work on the concept in 2014.[2]

The game was originally called Wizard Arena and had a fantasy setting.[3] March 2, 2016, was the date of the global release for both iOS and Android.[4] The PC version of the game was made available worldwide on October 22, 2023.[4]

What the cited sources add

Hodapp stated that upgrading a card awards experience which is rolled into the player's "King level".[5] Hodapp also noted that buying gold seemed the best way to spend gems, as gold is used to upgrade cards.[5] The PocketGamer.biz article by Jakub reported that Clash Royale delivered its third-best month ever with $78 million in revenue in October 2025.[6] TouchArcade's reviewer noted that the upgrade curve is steep, pointing out that reaching level two required just two cards and five gold.[5]

The same source reported that the timed chest feature was eliminated in March 2025 and replaced with four daily Lucky Drops.[6]
