Biography

Charles Daniels, a tenor born in Salisbury in 1960, began his musical path as a chorister at King's College, Cambridge, later attending Winchester College. He returned to King's College as a choral scholar, studying Natural Sciences and Music, before moving to the Royal College of Music to train under Edward Brooks with a Foundation Scholarship. His concert and recording work covers a wide historical range, from medieval pieces to modern composers like Luigi Nono and Benjamin Britten.

In December 2001, he performed as tenor soloist in Wojciech Kilar's Missa pro pace at the Vatican before Pope John Paul II. Daniels is most recognized for his Baroque performances, especially as the Evangelist in Bach's St Matthew and St John Passions; by 2016, he was considered likely the world's finest in that role. He has appeared frequently at Wigmore Hall and the BBC Proms, as well as festivals across Europe and North America. His opera credits include Purcell's The Fairy-Queen at Aix-en-Provence, the New York premiere of Lully's Atys, and the title role in Monteverdi's L'Orfeo for its Montreal premiere.

He spent sixteen years with the early music ensemble the Orlando Consort. Daniels also teaches early music performance practice at the Ringve Museum's International Summer Course in Norway.
