Creation and conception
Syaoran was created before Cardcaptor Sakura debuted, being the third character conceived after Sakura and Tomoyo Daidouji. Although he comes from Hong Kong, he was originally intended to be Japanese. Clamp designed Syaoran and Toya as a common archetype in their works: characters who act cold but are charming. Writer Nanase Ohkawa was careful with Syaoran's early characterization because he felt attracted to Yukito, yet his feelings differed from Sakura's love for Yukito.
Ohkawa was pleased that readers supported Syaoran and Sakura ending up together, stating it was not due to their age or gender. Clamp found Syaoran became an attractive character they could view as a younger brother, particularly because of his independence, as noted by Mokona and Nekoi. When Sakura believes she will never find the person she loves, Syaoran comforts her and gives her his handkerchief, which increased his popularity within the demographic.
Ohkawa compared Syaoran to a strong prince to describe his charm, noting that male readers also related to him due to their mutual feelings toward Sakura. In all Japanese-language productions, Syaoran is voiced by Motoko Kumai, who adjusted her tone for the sequel Clear Card to reflect his growth. In the Nelvana Cardcaptors dub, he was voiced by Rhys Huber, Jordan Kilik, and Mona Marshall; in the Animax dub by Candice Moore; and in Clear Card by Jason Liebrecht.
Characterization and themes
Syaoran is introduced as a distant child who is rude toward Sakura because they share the same goal. Both develop feelings for Yukito, but Syaoran's attraction is caused by his magic being affected by Yukito's alter ego, Yue. He realizes his math teacher Kaho Mizuki has magic and warns Sakura to keep her distance. Over time, Syaoran becomes interested in Sakura, taking on a more caring personality and acting as a mentor when she is concerned.
He blushes constantly when she speaks to him, and a key revelation of his affection occurs when he uses her name for the first time, as he usually avoids using people's names. Syaoran questions whether his feelings for Sakura and Yukito are genuine, but Yue explains that his attraction to other types of magic caused his crush on Yukito, marking an early coming-of-age. Writer Kiyoshi Saiga notes that the emphasis on Syaoran's and Sakura's feelings was due to the young demographic of the manga.
Appearances
Syaoran first appears in Chapter 6 of the manga (Volume 2 of the standard tankobon collections) as a transfer student from Hong Kong to Sakura's class. Like Sakura, he can use magic and initially tries to force her to hand over the Clow Cards, but fails. Over time, he accepts her as the collector of the cards, and the two fall in love. He is initially drawn to Yukito Tsukishiro, but this is because of Yukito's magic power.
The series ends with Syaoran returning to Hong Kong, but before departing he and Sakura express their love for each other. They are reunited two years later when Syaoran stays in Japan. In the anime, Syaoran has a cousin, Meiling Li, who claims to be engaged to him but eventually realizes he will be with Sakura. In the English dub Cardcaptors, he was renamed Li Showron and made a joint lead with Sakura to attract a male audience.
In Clear Card, Syaoran has returned from Hong Kong and stays in Japan, helping Sakura recover her lost cards. During a Clamp Twitter Space discussion in April 2024, series writer Nanase Ohkawa expressed uncertainty about depicting Sakura and Syaoran's wedding, stating it would be best for everyone to imagine it in their own hearts, but did not rule out a follow-up to Clear Card. Two alternative versions of Syaoran—a clone and the original—appear in Tsubasa: Reservoir Chronicle, where the clone mentions a mage who shares his identity provides a vase to seal the two clones.
Reception
Syaoran has been a popular character, placing third in the 1999 Animage Grand Prix for best male character and second in 2000. In the June 2018 issue of Newtype, he ranked No. 1 in the monthly poll of top male characters. Anime News Network initially described him as a jerk for competing against Sakura for the Clow Cards, but noted that when he becomes attracted to her, he acts less like a bully and more awkward, often blushing. Writers from The Japanification of Children's Popular Culture said Syaoran becomes a weak, awkward friend to Sakura, unable to confess his feelings, providing comic relief.
DVDTalk noted his characterization changes from rival to supporter. THEM Anime Reviews panned the edited Western version of Syaoran, calling him a bully and unkind idiot unlike the original. Adam Arnold of Animefringe praised Rhys Huber's voice work as Syaoran. For the second film, Animefringe regarded the melodramatic relationship between Syaoran and Sakura as the main focus, while Mania Entertainment enjoyed how their relationship develops with support from friends.
