Plot
A series of murders involves a device that fires a metal slug into victims, and analysis of the lead projectile reveals no trace of magic. Nault, who is controversial for avoiding magical methods—he relies on his own perceptions to detect lies rather than using truth spells—leads the investigation. He seeks the weapon's origins and meets Winston Churchill, a 130-year-old sorcerer powerful enough to potentially cloak the spells behind such a weapon. Churchill reveals a parallel universe where magic does not exist and science is supreme, and explains that the other world lacks magic due to its higher iron concentration. He states that Nault is uniquely suited to travel there because he has no counterpart in that pragmatic world, allowing him to exist equally in both. After Churchill is wounded by a bullet—which cannot be treated by magic because of the iron in the weapon—Nault teams up with Lenore, a pragmatist (the local term for scientist), to continue the investigation. Churchill teaches the spell of transference to Helen, the department's necromancer (mortician), enabling Nault and Lenore to cross into the other world.
