Murder in Space
A space murder mystery with a global viewer competition.
Murder in Space is a 1985 TV movie blending sci-fi and murder mystery, set just ahead of its time. An international crew returning from Mars aboard the Conestoga faces an explosion and a string of killings. Authorities forbid the ship from landing until the culprit is found. For its global premiere, the film omitted its conclusion, launching a viewer contest to identify the murderer or murderers. The ending aired days later, with contestants eliminated until a winner correctly named the killer. Only two countries produced winners with the right answer.

In the PRIMETIME magazine—the official guide for FIRST CHOICE*SUPERCHANNEL—a detachable entry form asked viewers to name the four murder victims, their nationalities, and, oddly, the method of each killing. It then posed the central question: “Who Committed the Murders?” A correct answer would win a trip on the Orient Express, but no entry was fully right. Instead, the magazine gave a year’s free subscription to the person whose guess came closest.
