Production
In late September 2011, Ánima Estudios gave the green light to a new series, forming an international partnership with SLR Productions, Home Plate Entertainment, and Telegael Teoranta. Jose Carlos Garcia de Letona, the executive VP of Ánima Estudios, expressed excitement about the collaboration, attributing it to a shared fondness for the show’s eccentric main characters. Suzanne Ryan, CEO of SLR Productions, predicted that Australian children would enjoy the series, calling it a fun and quirky update on well-known classic characters. Bill Schultz, Executive Producer and CEO of Home Plate Entertainment, noted that broadcasters had responded positively, pointing to a steady demand for animated character comedies with familiar iconic themes, and praised the creative co-production partners for their commitment to quality. Producer Fernando de Fuentes stated that, although the series originated in Mexico, it was created with an English-speaking audience in mind. Series creator José C. García de Letona explained that the show draws from character profiles found in Ánima Estudios’ first film, Wizards and Giants, but noted that many elements have changed significantly. He also mentioned that 70% of the production occurs in Mexico, with the rest handled abroad. On April 7, 2013, Canadian company CCI Entertainment secured distribution rights, and additional sales followed on December 9, 2013. Later, on October 16, 2017, Bejuba! Entertainment took over distribution and rebranded the series as Awesome Magical Tales. ABC Me ordered a second season, but that season remains stuck in development hell.
Reception
Emily Ashby of Common Sense Media gave the show 4 out of 5 stars. She wrote that Teenage Fairytale Dropouts delivers admirable messages through three teen characters navigating growing up. The series treats issues such as Fury’s undeveloped wings and Jeremiah’s small stature with humor, but the characters maintain solid self-esteem. Each story involves a rebellious situation with clear consequences and a positive lesson.
