History
The first daily version, Crimewatch Daily, premiered on 27 November 2000 and aired weekday mornings from 10:00 to 11:00am from a studio at New Scotland Yard. Presented by Phil Gayle and Jane Moore, it covered unsolved cases not featured in the main programme. Two further series aired in 2001, with the final edition broadcast on 7 December 2001. Crimewatch Roadshow began on 1 June 2009, broadcasting weekdays from 9:15 to 10:00am and replacing the main Crimewatch programme during June with twenty daily episodes. It originated from different locations across the country and included features on local police work. After the main programme's cancellation in October 2017, Crimewatch Roadshow expanded to two series per year. Twelve series were produced; Rav Wilding co-presented with Sophie Raworth initially, then became main anchor from the second series. On-location co-presenters included Ginny Buckley, Miriam O'Reilly, Dave Guest, Alice Bandhukvari, Nicola Rees, Sian Lloyd, Sonali Shah, Michelle Ackerley and Tina Daheley. During the fifth series, Jacqui Hames presented Fridays with updates on past successes. From the twelfth series, Ackerley joined Wilding as studio anchor, with John Paul Davies as roving reporter. Crimewatch Live debuted on 8 March 2021, originally airing 11:00 to 11:45am before moving an hour earlier in September 2021. It is filmed at BBC Cymru Wales New Broadcasting House in Cardiff, with Wilding and Ackerley in studio and Davies reporting on scene.
Show format
Broadcasting on weekday mornings at various times, each episode typically features three or four cases with reconstructions of the crimes. It is one of the largest live factual studio productions. Segments include interviews with senior detectives or victims' relatives and friends, and display of key evidence such as E-FIT profiles and details of enquiries. A CCTV section shows crimes captured on camera with enhanced suspect imagery. A 'Wanted Faces' section presents four close-up photos of suspects police seek, often including aliases; these photos appear during the closing credits, one of the few BBC programmes not reducing credit size. Viewers may call 08000 468 999 until 12:30pm on broadcast mornings or send texts to 63399 at any time. Additional cases, reconstructions, CCTV footage and wanted faces are posted on the programme's website and remain until criminals are caught or convicted. Each episode is available on BBC iPlayer for 24 hours, later extended to seven days.
