Production
The series, an adaptation of the Belgian show Hotel Beau Séjour, marked Sky Studios’ first fully in-house production. Announced in April 2021, its development had been reported the previous October. The writing team included Pete McTighe, Charlotte Wolf, Roanne Bardsley, Gemma Hurley, and Laura Grace. Ed Lilly directed the series, with McTighe, Serena Thompson, and Julian Stevens serving as executive producers; Lilly and Wolf also worked as associate producers. Filming began in May 2021 across northern England, including the Lake District and areas near Manchester. The eight episodes were shot in four two-episode blocks, each with a different director. Production wrapped in October 2021, with post-production, including final picture and sound, completed in London into early 2022. McTighe revealed plans in May 2022 for a second season called Risen, but Sky Studios canceled it in March 2023, just two months before filming was to start. In Cumbria, a hologram of protagonist Neve was projected onto Derwentwater the day before the series premiere. The figure silently mouthed “come and find me” to surprised passers-by on their morning walk.
