History and format

Got What It Takes? was a singing competition for young performers. Each episode featured three contestants in a sing-off, with their mothers, aunts, or sisters deciding the winner. The young singers learned about the music industry each week, while their female relatives took part in challenges to secure their child’s spot in the sing-off. The contestant with the most sing-off victories earned an automatic place in the final. Three additional finalists were chosen by public vote, and the overall winner got to perform at BBC Radio 1’s Big Weekend. Lauren Platt hosted the first three series, then Anna Maynard took over. Melvin Odoom co-hosted with Maynard for the final series in 2021. A “music maestro” helped the contestants prepare: David Tench held the role for the first three series, followed by Max Cooke from series four onward. A “games guru,” Kevin Adams, guided the relatives in their challenges up to the fifth series.
