SKT Ieper

Basket SKT Ieper, a basketball club based in Ypres (Ieper), Belgium, emerged from a 2020 merger with the women’s team Blue Cats. Before that, the club was known as Athlon Ieper, a longtime First Division side, and from 2008 it played as Melco Ieper.

The first Ypres club, Basket Ball Club Ypres, formed on October 14, 1946. A second club, JSP Ieper, appeared in 1952. On June 14, 1954, Athlon Ieper was founded as the athletics and basketball arm of the Picañol company, backed by sponsor Bernard Steverlynck. Athlon entered the 1954–55 season in the third provincial division with orange-black colors and soon surpassed its local rivals. It won its first title in 1958 and, two seasons later, earned promotion to the first provincial level by beating Oostkamp Merels.

In June 1960, BBC Ypres and Athlon merged to form BBC Athlon Ypres, keeping the orange-black kit. That 1960–61 season ended with a title and promotion to the fourth national division, and the team moved into the Bernard Steverlynckhalle. In 1964, the club won another title and brought in Belgium’s first American guest player, Rex Hughes, though he returned to the U.S. after a few months. That same year, as a fourth-division club, Athlon stunned the league by reaching the Belgian Cup final, losing 131–62 to Racing Mechelen. The following season, it reached the Cup semifinals.

The 1966–67 season saw Terry Kunze join, and the next year Mel Northway and Larry Meek helped Athlon win the third national division title. In 1968–69, Frank Nightingale spurred promotion to the first division, and the club also made the Cup semifinals, falling 97–94 to Racing Bell Mechelen. Sponsors Beaulieu and Bang & Olufsen supported this run.

Relegation hit in 1974–75, but Phil Filer and Nick Conner helped return the team to the top flight after the 1975–76 season. Frank Gugliotta replaced Filer in 1977–78, yet the revival was short-lived: relegation came again in 1979–80, and the club bottomed out in the third division in 1982–83.

Athlon climbed back to the second national division in 1987–88 via a final round against Wasmuel and Zonhoven, and it beat first-division CUVA Houthalen in the cup. After an 11th-place finish in 1988–89 and a shaky start the next season, Louis Casteels helped the team survive.
