Ray Lewis announced on January 2, 2013, that he would retire once the Ravens' 2012 playoff run ended. He had torn his triceps against the Dallas Cowboys on October 14, 2012, had surgery three days later and missed most of the regular season, but returned for the playoffs, and his last game was the 34-31 win over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl XLVII on February 3, 2013.

Reader's Guide
He retired as the last remaining player from the Ravens' first season in 1996, having played 17 seasons for the club and led it in tackles 14 times. His honours included two Defensive Player of the Year awards, in 2000 and 2003, and the Super Bowl XXXV MVP award, when he was the second linebacker to win it and the first on the winning side.
