The Ravens' defense of 2000 holds the NFL record for the fewest points allowed in a 16-game regular season, 165, or 10.3 a game, with four shutouts, and is counted among the greatest defenses of all time. In Brian Billick's second season the team went 12-4, its first winning record, reached the playoffs as a wild card, won all three postseason games and beat the New York Giants 34-7 in Super Bowl XXXV in Tampa.

The defense carried an offense that failed to score a touchdown for five straight games after a 37-0 win over Cincinnati; Baltimore still won the first two of those games on Matt Stover field goals. The Ravens started 5-1 with three shutouts, and Ray Lewis, that season's Defensive Player of the Year, was the Super Bowl MVP. Only three regular-season opponents finished with winning records: the Steelers, Dolphins and Titans. The NFL ranked the 2000 Ravens 22nd among its 100 greatest teams, the highest-placed team that did not win its division.
