Background

Seeking Bhaal's divine power, Sarevok engineers political and economic instability around the city of Baldur's Gate to provoke a war with Amn. He ambushes Gorion and the player character outside Candlekeep, leads the Iron Throne conspiracy behind the Sword Coast's iron shortage, infiltrates Candlekeep as Koveras, and is finally defeated in a temple of Bhaal beneath the city.

He returns in Baldur's Gate II: Throne of Bhaal, where he can be restored to life and recruited as a party member, a reversal presented as one of the expansion's big surprises. James Ohlen has said a childhood tabletop character of that name, played by his friend Jeff Veitenheimer, was among the inspirations.

Ohlen also proposed a time-travel storyline for Shadows of Amn in which Sarevok had won the first game and become dictator of the Sword Coast; it was dropped before any dialogue was written. Critical discussion has focused on his role as a dark counterpart to the player character, and critics have differed over whether the relative simplicity of his motivations makes him an effective antagonist or a less memorable one.
