Background
Minsc began in a tabletop campaign run by Baldur's Gate lead designer James Ohlen, played by BioWare developer Cameron Tofer as an unstable comic-relief ranger with a pet hamster in the Dark Sun setting. Writer Lukas Kristjanson expanded his dialogue and his relationship with Boo, and he is marked by exaggerated devotion to heroism, battle cries, great strength, sincerity and apparent mental instability.
In Baldur's Gate he is a ranger and berserker from Rashemen on his dajemma, a rite of passage for the Ice Dragon Berserker Lodge, sworn to protect the witch Dynaheir. In Shadows of Amn he is imprisoned by Jon Irenicus with Imoen and Jaheira, and Dynaheir's death leaves him seeking revenge. Throne of Bhaal's epilogue has him return to Rashemen a hero and found the adventuring company the Justice Fist.
Boo's description comes from the Spelljammer setting, and David Gaider said the hamster had no special abilities. BioWare co-founder Ray Muzyka named Minsc his favourite character, and later commentators call him the series' de facto mascot.
