Background
During the game it emerges that the Dark Urge was the mastermind behind its plot before being betrayed by another Bhaalspawn, Orin. Confronting Orin, the player can reject Bhaal or accept the god's blessing, and choose to save the world or kill everyone in it.
Lead developer Swen Vincke had wanted a character like this for some time, and the team planned a Bhaalspawn from the start as a nod to the earlier games' protagonist. Principal writer Jan van Dosselaer first drafted them as a companion struggling against their urge, but lead writer Adam Smith felt the struggle had to be experienced firsthand, so it became a customisable origin. Originally a Paladin, the class was opened up because the fixed choice made roleplaying difficult.
The character was kept secret through early access. Smith argued it was not meant as the evil run and could be the most heroic character in the game by resisting its urges. Critics praised how it changed the game's core concept, with some calling the Dark Urge the true protagonist.
