Lore & Background
The game follows five adventurers—Dorn Redbear, Vhaidra Uoswiir, Ysuran Auondril, Borador Goldhand, and Allessia Faithhammer—who meet on the Trade Way outside Baldur's Gate. They learn that since the collapse of Xantam's Guild, the route has become dangerous due to the Red Fang Marauders, a goblin army. After freeing a caravan guard and rescuing Wayfork Village, they enter Baldur's Gate to investigate murders and uncover a plot involving the Zhentarim criminal network.
Each character has a unique race and class: a human barbarian, a drow monk, a moon-elf necromancer, a dwarven rogue, and a human cleric. The game features real-time combat with a rotatable isometric three-quarter top-down view. Players can customize stats through experience points, with points awarded per level and ability points granted every four levels. The game also includes cooperative gameplay, custom weapon and armor creation using runestones and gems, and four difficulty levels including an Extreme mode unlocked after completing any other difficulty.
Reader's Guide
Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance II was well received on both PlayStation 2 and Xbox, though many critics felt it was not a significant advancement over the first game. A sequel was planned but cancelled early in development due to legal problems and the closure of Black Isle Studios after Interplay went bankrupt. The use of the Dark Alliance game engine led to a lawsuit by Snowblind Studios against Interplay, alleging unauthorized use of the engine.
The game was later re-released in July 2022, ported to Linux, macOS, Microsoft Windows, Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S. Its legacy includes being a notable entry in the Dark Alliance series, offering cooperative play and a detailed item crafting system, while its development troubles highlight the financial and legal challenges faced by Interplay and Black Isle Studios.
