Grey Council
The Minbari ruling council that captured Sinclair and that Delenn later broke and rebuilt.
The Grey Council is the ruling council of the Minbari in Babylon 5, drawn from the religious, warrior and worker castes. The Earth-Minbari War began when an Earth task force under Captain Michael Jankowski of the EAS Prometheus met three Minbari warships at the edge of Minbari space, one carrying the Grey Council; Jankowski misread the Minbari opening their gunports, ordered his ships to fire, and the Minbari leader Dukhat was killed.
Lore & Background
At the Battle of the Line, the last major battle of the war, Jeffrey Sinclair tried to ram a Minbari cruiser but was captured and interrogated by the Grey Council. Their Triluminary detected Valen's DNA in him, and the Council, deeply shocked, concluded he carried the soul of Valen, the Minbari hero of a thousand years before. Delenn, who at first hides from Babylon 5 that she is a leader of the Grey Council, helped have Sinclair posted as Earth's first ambassador to Minbar, because he was the first human the Council had dealt with directly.
Sinclair later learned he was not Valen reborn but Valen himself, which is why the Triluminary reacted so strongly to him. When Babylon 5 broke away from Earth, Delenn saved the station with a Minbari fleet at the cost of breaking the symbolic circle of the Grey Council. Without the Council to keep order, the religious and warrior castes fell into civil war. After the war Delenn handed control of the Grey Council to the worker caste, which had long stood between the other two.
