Synopsis
Fatty and his sister George are ordinary children whose scientist father experiments with time travel. He becomes trapped in a limbo-like dimension, and the rod-like crystal at the heart of his experiment is sought by the wealthy and evil Nancy, who pursues the siblings to possess it. The crystal can freeze time around its bearer. With help from their friend Izzy, aunty Kath and grandad Bert, the children search for a way to bring their father back while evading Nancy and her henchman Phil, and also contending with a gang of BMX biker kids named Slasher, Jonsey and Maggot.
Production and distribution
Fatty & George was a television series shot in Hobart and at the Tasmanian Film Corporation’s Moonah studio. The Corporation was a state government initiative to boost local film and TV production. The show aired on the ABC in 1981 and overseas, making it one of Tasmania’s most successful exports. It had several ABC reruns, but those broadcast rights have now lapsed. In 2004, Screen Tasmania included its first three episodes in the Tasmanian Travelling Picture Show.
Home media
The Tasmanian Archive & Heritage Office digitally remastered every episode of the children's series and put them on DVD. John Honey, who directed, produced, and co-wrote the original show, was thrilled, noting that many people still remember Fatty & George.
