Background

An Attack on Titan stage show had first been developed around 2016 and was announced with the release of Volume 21 of the manga, but during rehearsals the acrobat Kazutaka Yoshino was injured while testing the ODM gear mechanics and later died in hospital, and the play was cancelled. A new musical was announced in 2022, with a poster and trailer released on September 5; reception was mostly positive, though some hoped the production would be more careful. Isayama said he had initial worries because of the accident, but felt the new company would be much more careful and looked forward to the show. A key visual followed on October 21 with photos of the individual characters.

The story opens 100 years after man-eating giants known as Titans decimated humanity, with the survivors living behind three walls until a reminder that they are trapped in a birdcage, and a young Eren Yeager swears to destroy every Titan. The musical covers roughly the material up to the end of the "Struggle for Trost" arc, ending around chapter 11 or 12 of the manga or episode 10 of the anime.

After its Osaka debut from January 7 to 9, 2023, the show played the Nippon Seinenkan Hall in Tokyo from January 14 to 24. The cast and staff reprised their roles at the New York City Center in Midtown Manhattan from October 11 to 13, 2024, performing in Japanese with English subtitles.
