Gameplay

This is the first Spyro game to allow a player to fly at any time through a free-fly mode. It also features a co-op mode with Cynder, letting players complete the game as either Spyro or Cynder and switch between the two dragons. Unlike previous Legend of Spyro titles, which required linear travel through levels, this game has larger areas to explore and items to collect for progression. Spyro retains command of fire, electricity, ice, and earth, all available from the start, while Cynder controls poison, fear, wind, and shadow—powers granted when she was controlled by the Dark Master. Spyro is stronger but slower, while Cynder is weaker but faster. Along with standard power-ups from gems, both dragons can equip pieces of Dragon Armor. A melee combo system rewards more gems for more hits. Blue gems power up and upgrade moves, red gems restore health, and green gems provide magic for elemental attacks. Fury Gems are replaced by dark crystals that drain magic if not destroyed; the Fury Meter increases with each attack landed on enemies. Elite enemies have masks granting invincibility to normal attacks, requiring the player to use an element matching the mask's color to knock it off.

Plot

Three years after the previous game, Spyro and Cynder, now teenagers, are freed from a crystalline prison by Grublins. They are tethered together with green energy chains created by the Dark Master and carried away, while Sparx is found by Hunter of Avalar. Spyro and Cynder awaken in a dark volcano-like area, chained to a platform. After defeating Grublins and an earth Golem, they escape the Catacombs with Hunter and Sparx. At Twilight Falls, Hunter reveals that the Dark Master, Malefor, has returned and covered the land in darkness. Reaching the Dragon City of Warfang, the group is separated during a siege by Malefor's forces. After the siege is driven back, the Golem returns with a new arm made from city parts; Spyro and Cynder defeat it by destroying the Dark Crystal in its head, reuniting with the Dragon Guardians. That night, Malefor sends a message that he has revived the Destroyer, an ancient creature meant to renew the world through destruction. Ignitus plans to intercept the Destroyer underground. Spyro and Cynder open the gates to the Ruins of Warfang, leading forces to a canyon where the Destroyer will complete the Ring of Annihilation by destroying a dam. They destroy the Destroyer's Dark Crystal heart, but it completes the Belt of Fire. Ignitus sacrifices himself to escort Spyro and Cynder through the Belt of Fire to the Burned Lands, which lead to Malefor's lair.
