Playing career
Reese was selected in the 2000 OHL Priority Selection by the Belleville Bulls in round 16 (#323 overall). He was then chosen in the 2002 USHL Entry Draft by the Lincoln Stars with the 9th overall pick. In the 2003 NHL entry draft, the New York Rangers drafted him 209th overall. He played collegiate hockey at Harvard in the ECAC, winning two conference championships and making three NCAA tournament appearances. After missing 15 games as a freshman due to a back injury, which also kept him out of the 2004 World Junior Championships, he returned to lead all Crimson defensemen in scoring as a sophomore with 19 points (7 goals, 12 assists) in 34 games. He led Harvard defensemen in scoring each of the next two seasons and was named team captain and MVP his senior year. Reese was named to the NCAA (ECAC) Second All-Star Team in both 2005–2006 and 2006–2007. He made his professional debut in the 2007–08 season with the Phoenix Coyotes' AHL affiliate, the San Antonio Rampage, playing 59 games. In the 2008–09 season, his ice time increased and he contributed 28 points while playing regularly. In summer 2009, Reese signed a contract with the Columbus Blue Jackets after a tryout and was assigned to their AHL affiliate, the Syracuse Crunch, where he recorded 22 points and a team-best +12 rating in 51 games. On March 1, two days before the NHL trade deadline, he was traded to the New York Islanders for forward Greg Moore. After one game with the Islanders' AHL affiliate, the Bridgeport Sound Tigers, he was recalled to the NHL and finished the season with two goals, two assists, and a +4 rating. He began the 2010–11 AHL season with Bridgeport but was recalled to the NHL on November 15, 2010.
