Playing career
Doan grew up in Arizona and played in the Phoenix Jr. Coyotes program. The Chicago Steel of the United States Hockey League selected him with the 95th overall pick of the 2018 USHL Futures Draft. After one more year with the Jr. Coyotes, he joined the Steel for the 2019–20 season, recording 14 points in 45 games. He was passed over by all 31 NHL teams in the 2020 NHL entry draft. On June 21, 2019, Doan committed to play for Arizona State University, beginning his collegiate career there in the 2021–22 season. In his second year of draft eligibility, he returned to the Steel and finished third on the team and in the league with 70 points in 53 games, helping the Steel win the Clark Cup. The NHL Central Scouting Bureau ranked him the 87th-best North American skater for the 2021 draft. On July 24, 2021, the Arizona Coyotes selected him in the second round, 37th overall. After his sophomore year as captain of the Sun Devils in 2022–23, he signed a three-year entry-level contract with the Coyotes on March 16, 2023. Since the contract did not start until 2023–24, he signed with the Tucson Roadrunners for the remainder of that season. He began the 2023–24 season with the Roadrunners, leading the team in goals and points before being recalled to the Coyotes on March 25, 2024. The next day, he made his NHL debut and scored two goals, including the game-winner, in a 6–2 win over the Columbus Blue Jackets, becoming the first franchise player to score multiple goals in his debut. At the end of the 2024–25 season, the rebranded Utah Mammoth traded Doan and Michael Kesselring to the Buffalo Sabres for JJ Peterka on June 25, 2025.
